DURHAM, N.C. — For the first time in 34 years, Duke football has beaten a top-10 team.
With their 28-7 win against No. 9 Clemson on Monday night at Wallace Wade Stadium, the Blue Devils snapped a streak that lasted 12,392 days.
Duke last beat a top-10 opponent with a 21-17 win against No. 7 Clemson on Sept. 30, 1989 under Steve Spurrier. Spurrier and members of the Blue Devils’ 1989 squad were in attendance for Duke’s 2023 opener against the reigning ACC champions.
Duke quarterback Riley Leonard had the go-ahead touchdown and the Blue Devils had five game-changing plays with two blocked field goals and a trio of fumble recoveries.
The Blue Devils had lost 28 straight against teams ranked inside the top-10 of the AP football poll before Monday’s win. Here are some observations from Duke’s season opener and a look at its next opponent.
