Kristen Stewart thinks the film that made herfamousis "such a gay movie."
The "Twilight" star made the admission about the 2008 romance film in an interview with Variety, published Thursday, chronicling her journey to becoming a queer pioneer in the entertainment industry. Stewart is approaching her eighth Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where she headlines queer romance thriller "Love Lies Bleeding" and sci-fi flick "Love Me."
Stewart said she "can only see now" how one of her most heterosexual roles in "Twilight" has a queer undertone.
"I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It's such a gay movie," she said. In "Twilight," Stewart played Bella Swan, a girl who moves to a small town in Washington and falls in love with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who is secretly a vampire. Teenager-turned-werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) becomes another romantic interest for Bella.
"I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor (Lautner) and Rob (Pattinson) and me, and it's so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book," Stewart told Variety. "It's all about oppression, about wanting what's going to destroy you. That's a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love."
"Twilight," which spawned multiple sequels, was based on the popular books by author Stephenie Meyer and both the books and films became cult classics. The 2008 film was a box office success and grossed over $408 million dollars worldwide, while the book saga has sold more than 160 million copies worldwide.
After her performances in the "Twilight" saga, Stewart made star turns in 2012's "Snow White and the Huntsman," the 2015 movie "American Ultra," and 2018's crime drama "Lizzie." But one movie she's done since then was far from her favorite, she revealed.
Stewart told the outlet that she hated making "Charlie's Angels," the 2019 movie from actress and director Elizabeth Banks. Stewart made the comments in a "Know their Lines" video where Variety asks actors if they know lines from their body of work.

"That was from a little film called 'Charlie's Angels.' We wanted a strong opener, you know? We wanted to really like broadcast what the movie was about. It was a good idea at the time. I hated making that movie. I don't know what else to say to you," Stewart said.
The Oscar nominee, who received a nod for her portrayal of the late Princess Diana in 2021's "Spencer," is in a longtime relationship with screenwriter Dylan Meyer. Stewart and Meyer went Instagram official in October 2019, when Meyer shared a kissing picture of the two.
